Final Fantasy 7 Revelation drops new weapons gameplay as end of trilogy draws near

It’s been a long time coming; the Final Fantasy VII Remake Project is finally set to draw to a close in early 2027.

In fact, it’ll draw to a close precisely in Spring 2027 as Final Fantasy VII Revelation just confirmed as much at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, fronted by Geoff Keighley.

The game’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, personally stopped by to unveil a new trailer for the title which charts Cloud Strife and his AVALANCHE allies’ last attempt to take a final stand against Sephiroth in his attempted destruction of Gaia.

“The final battle to decide the fate of the world has begun,” teases the game’s synopsis.

“Take to the skies, chart your course, and stand with your companions against Sephiroth one last time. A vast planet awaits. Everything leads here.”

From the stage of Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, director Hamaguchi teased several new weapons “in the final chapter of this epic journey”.

Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon, and Ultima Weapon were the ferocious new beasts revealed - and they don’t look easy to fend off.

We already know that while there’s one single ending within Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the story will adapt elsewhere depending on the choices made by players.

Those who remember the original Final Fantasy VII will know that we’re set to reunite with the beloved Highwind Airship, plus Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind are joining the game as playable characters.

As for combat, synergy attacks are set to return, as are classic summons so players should feel right at home settling back into the trilogy’s systems.

As for what’s changed, FITS replaces the existing Job system, standing for Function Integreated Tactical Suitwear.

It sounds a little serious and daunting, but it basically just means that you’ll be able to change party member classes by assigning them new outfits, which is pretty neat.

Fans can’t decide if they’re ready to say goodbye

While we’re all clamouring to get our hands on Final Fantasy VII Revelation, fans are split online between being hyped and also sad that this experience is finally coming to an end.

“The 11 year old in my 40 year old body still can’t even believe this project was real,” read one trailer comment.

“READYYYY,” another added, while someone said, “Yeah! Can’t wait.”

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is crucially set to launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC simultaneously. This was not the case for former entries.

The previous entry in the series, Rebirth, landed on PlayStation 5 before porting to PC one year later and Xbox and Nintendo one year after that, for example.

This simultaneous launch across all platforms means that fans won’t be spoiled as to how the trilogy ends - even if Final Fantasy VII’s story is already out there.
