Video game adaptations didn’t have the best reputation, but then Sonic The Hedgehog 2 came along. Given the whole redesign debacle a few years ago, no one expected a Sonic film series to be a revolutionary success but it’s been exactly that. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 went on to become the most successful video game film adaptation of all time so naturally, fans are waiting for a sequel.

The good news is that we now know when that sequel is coming. Paramount Pictures have announced that Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is due to be released on 20 December, 2024. That does mean we have a good two and a half years ahead of us, but all good things come to those who wait.

Other than the release date, Paramount are keeping a closed lid on the plot details of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 but we can presume that Sonic 2’s post-credits scene offers us a few clues. Warning, Sonic 2 spoilers incoming. The post-credits perfectly set up the arrival of Shadow The Hedgehog. The fan-favourite appeared to be floating in a stasis tank guarded by GUN soldiers.
No casting has yet been announced when it comes to Shadow but fans are desperate for Keanu Reeves to take on the role and it’s a very good suggestion. The Sonic Universe won’t end there as Idris Elba is reprising his role as Knuckles in a new series for Paramount Plus. It’s Sonic’s world. We’re just living in it.
