The first trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has dropped, and my God it looks fantastic.

Sonic The Hedgehog fans have been waiting for months for a first look at the next film in the series, and so far it hasn’t seemed to disappoint.

Take a look at the trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 below

The trailer opens with Sonic having another heart-to-heart with his “dad” Tom, before the smash-cuts to Shadow The Hedgehog breaching containment.

Sonic’s rival is confirmed to be voiced by Keanu Reeves, a casting that fans have been overwhelmingly happy with.

We see a few action segments where Team Sonic face off against Shadow, but are hopelessly outmatched by the much more powerful hedgehog.

Even Knuckles who was a serious threat in the last film is easily knocked out of the conflict.

Eagle-eyed fans will notice that some of Shadow's moves are straight out of his video game appearances, like his chaos control teleports, and he even rides a motorcycle at one point like he does in his spin-off title.

Sonic then decides they’re not a match for him as they are now, and decides to enlist the help of Dr Eggman in the hopes they can turn the tide.

Dr Eggman will once again be played by Jim Carrey, who’ll also be playing Eggman’s grandfather Dr Gerald Robotnik, who’s seemingly still alive in this universe unlike the video games.

It’s a promising trailer, and sets the stage for the most explosive Sonic conflict yet, but I’m sure there’ll be a few other surprises in the full film that Paramount is keeping under wraps.

It also has a very different tone to the previous films, highlighting how Shadow's upbringing was much more bleak than Sonic's was.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will be shown in cinemas around the world on 20 December later this year, and could potentially set up a fourth film is fan reactions are as favourable as the previous movie.
