With both John and Arthur’s stories complete, and Grand Theft Auto VI’s release on the horizon, the topic of Red Dead Redemption 3’s protagonist will continue to pick up steam over the next couple of years– but who could possibly follow on from two of the best video game protagonists of all time?
Well, some Red Dead Redemption fans think they have their answer, although the prevailing choice continues to be somewhat divisive.
Following the events of Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s pretty clear that Rockstar Games intentionally left a few breadcrumbs and set-ups for a third entry in the series, especially where potential protagonists are concerned.
However, the answers vary somewhat, depending on whether or not Rockstar Games opts to make the third entry in the game another prequel, or a straight-up sequel to the events of the original game.

If they choose to go the former route, choices like Hosea Matthews and even Dutch van der Linde get thrown around a lot, although many think that Rockstar should instead opt to create a wholly original character (much in the same way they did with Arthur Morgan).
If they choose to make it a sequel to the events of Red Dead Redemption, however, there are some clear picks. A story exploring Sadie Adler’s life as an outlaw, or Charles Smith’s life as one of the few remaining Native Americans in a hostile Wild West, seem intentionally set up by Rockstar Games.
There is, of course, a more obvious choice, and the community at large seems to be coming around to it: Jack Marston.
“Honestly, I wouldn't mind. I like to see Jack in a sense find redemption that allows him to move on from the past and turn his life around,” commented user Devilpogostick89.

“We know the guy went through a lot since he was a kid and Arthur and his parents would want him to live life free from all that crap. Like end it with him hanging up his guns and become a writer.”
“I think RDR3 should have Jack as the main character, and it should be set in the same general locations during the prohibition era,” replied user joe-barton74.
“From what little knowledge I have of history, I imagine Jack would have been conscripted into the military during the first world War, he would not have willingly fought for the US government.”
However, I have an alternate idea: I kinda don’t see a reason as to why it couldn’t be all three.

Sadie and Charles would hardly be decrepit by the time Jack avenges his family at the end of Red Dead Redemption’s epilogue, as there are only 15 years between the events of RDR2 and RDR1’s conclusion.
Ultimately however, we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Rockstar Games is probably only just thinking about RDR3 at the moment, and is more focused on polishing off GTA VI and planning for its GTA Online content.
Here’s hoping the development time of the next Red Dead game is a little shorter than GTA VI’s.
