The Blood of Dawnwalker’s launch was one of the most intriguing releases in recent memory, with the team behind arguably the greatest fantasy RPG of all time upping the ante with an ambitious take on the open-world genre.
Rebel Wolves, the studio boasting a range of former CD Projekt RED members who birthed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has quickly been applauded for its narrative storyline and engaging world, with The Blood of Dawnwalker launching to positive acclaim.
Yet one feature of the game has divided opinions.
The game deploys a race against time, where players get 30 days (of in-game time, not real-life time) to save the family of protagonist Coen.

This unique format forces players to be selective in their exploration and side questing, with each mission taking up part of a day cycle and limiting what Coen can get done.
For the most part, this has been a smash hit, with players appreciating the worldbuilding and human nature (the irony is peak) while trying to grow and scale before running to save the day at the last opportunity.
In our 9/10 glowing review of the game, we revealed the time limitations were 'risky', but it paid off.
"Its time mechanic is risky - and a nightmare for completionists - but it adds a brilliant sense of urgency into the open world. The Blood of Dawnwalker is all about consequence. Which quests should you tackle? As a human or a vampire? It’s entirely what you make of it, offering up a bold and engaging formula that I’d be glad to see walk away with 2026’s GOTY trophy," we wrote.
For others, it is nothing more than an annoyance - and that's where the popular 'Better Story Timer' mod comes into play.

This popular The Blood of Dawnwalker mod is extending its divisive game time - but should you really download it?
Currently at the top of the NexusMods list for The Blood of Dawnwalker mods is 'Better Story Timer', which has already attracted the attention of over 32,000 players.
The mod allows you to extend the game time way beyond the capped 30 days, giving you complete access to the open-world setting without the constraints of rushing to the endgame.
Offering 90 days of game time and even adds more day segments, meaning you have the capacity for more quests in a single day, and more days to get your stuff done.
You can see the attraction, especially for those who enjoy completing games to the maximum before moving on to the endgame.
But while many players have jumped at this chance, others on social media have slammed the mod, claiming that it ruins the point of the game and turns it into any old fantasy RPG.
"It completely defeats that purpose of the game's design," one player wrote on X.
Another added, "People often complain about modern games being handholdy or too easy, and this is exactly why. The modern 'gamer' doesn’t want to engage with the slightest bit of friction or discomfort."
A third popular post said, "Gamers will do anything they can to not experience a game the way the developers intended."
The time mechanic is a great gamble from Rebel Wolves, and purists have enjoyed it thoroughly.
But 32,000 users - at least - disagree and want to explore the world further. I suppose there's a compliment in there, though.
