Red Dead Redemption 2 Player Does What Rockstar Won't, Drops Free Overhaul

The definitive version?

Red Dead Redemption 2 still doesn’t have a new-gen port, and I think it’s safe to say fans have lost their patience while waiting for one.

Evidence points to us getting one relatively soon though. Rockstar Games recently released a modern port of Red Dead Redemption and while it wasn’t a remaster or remake it at least included all of the DLC and boosted the gameplay to 60 frames-per-second, as well as increased the resolution.

Is it perfect? No, there are some players who prefer the original port. However for many it’s the way to play the first Red Dead Redemption game.

Now fans are adamant that Rockstar Games is planning a new-gen port of Red Dead Redemption 2 next, but while they wait some have been taking matters into their own hands.

If you play Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC you can install a variety of mods that aim to improve performance and you can find examples of what they do on YouTube.

Digital Dreams and channels like it have produced several videos of Red Dead Redemption 2 running at max-settings with overhaul mods piled on top.

One such mod has the remarkably long title of RDR2 Performance Booster V2 (Improves Performance and Fixes Stutters and Reduces Screen Tearing), and you can find it on NexusMods right now.

It does exactly what it says on the tin, boosts the performance of your game on PC for a, hopefully, smoother experience. It’s the kind of thing we’d expect from an official port from Rockstar but of course the official one will likely be more optimised.

For those who find themselves lost in Red Dead Redemption 2’s open-world well after the credits roll, or those who fancy starting a new playthrough sometime soon, it’s the ideal mod and you can use it in tandem with other mods like it.

PC is arguably the best platform to experience Red Dead Redemption 2 on because performance enhancing mods aside you can also install a mod that eliminates some of the games more annoying features, such as one that removes the long, dull prologue you’re forded through every time you start a new game.

The above performance boost mod does nothing for console players unfortunately but given Rockstar Games has released a new-gen port of Red Dead Redemption we’re expecting the same treatment for Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2026. The ball is in Rockstar’s court now.
