Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that Sony released the PlayStation 5 in late 2020. However, a reason that it might feel more recent than that is due to the seemingly never-ending stock shortage.

Some very patient gamers had to wait months, perhaps even over a year, to get their hands on a PlayStation 5.

That is, unless, they were willing to fill the pockets of greedy reseller selling the console for drastically inflated prices.

When Will the PlayStation 6 Be Released?

At the time of writing, we don't have a definitive release date, with some reports claiming that the PlayStation 6 could arrive within the next few years, especially as the next Sony console has already begun development.

That being said, it could arrive as late as 2029, which would be three years from now. Typically, Sony tends to release its consoles every seven to eight years (give or take). I guess that can all depend on sales and how fast technology may or may not be evolving.

Redditor lLygerl believes that if the PlayStation 6 launches in 2029, Sony could be making a big mistake.

The reason they believe that it would be a mistake to launch the PlayStation 6 in 2029 is due to factors such as AMD’s RDNA GPU being out of date at that point. Resolution may suffer due to the increasing demands of ray tracing, RAM and storage becoming more expensive, to name a few.

“Everyone crying about 2027 is 'too early’. Sure, the AI boom has caused a complete disaster in component pricing, but the show must go on,” exclaimed Complete_Lurk3r. “You don't want a PS6 in 2027?.... don't buy it.”

“Ray tracing is the future of lighting, but it was implemented in games way too early. If I have to pay $1000 just for a GPU to get high fidelity path tracing with nearly 60fps, the feature is simply not ready for the market,” explained Razor_NfS.

“I honestly think that seven years for the PS5 is not long enough for both using the hardware and releasing enough media for it to feel like the power is there. Technology hasn't evolved enough to justify a gen change instead of just a mere specs upgrade,” claimed DSDantas.

Only time will tell what the future may hold for the PlayStation 6. Personally, I’m in no major rush.

I think console gaming is at a good standard now, and with PC parts being as expensive as they are, we should hold out, in my opinion.
