PUBG is getting a major upgrade, switching to Unreal Engine 5

PUBG: Battlegrounds has outlined its 2024 road map.

PUBG: Battlegrounds is a reliable old friend, one which is now celebrating its seventh anniversary.

To mark the occasion, KRAFTON has outlined the game’s roadmap for 2024 - and players will soon see a number of major changes implemented.

The most exciting of which is easily the decision to switch PUBG over to Unreal Engine 5.

There’s little information on when this version of the game is expected to launch with devs instead saying that they’re beginning to “embark on the exciting journey” of this transition.

When PUBG does shift over to Unreal Engine 5, it’ll also introduce a User Generated Content service which sounds a lot like Fortnite’s UEFN to make a simple comparison.

Take a look at our video preview of upcoming RPG Rise of the Ronin below.

Developers are also working on ‘in-game interaction features’, including destructible buildings which devs hope will infuse “the game with an enriched layer of strategy and tactics”.

Gunplay updates will now roll out every two months so that balance issues are addressed more swiftly, plus a new Team vs. Team gameplay system will soon be added.

New transportation and looting objects are in the works which are said to have “direct combat effects”, plus support items like the Repair Kit will soon be available as world spawn items.

Dynamic actions are another area of focus, with the idea of portable zip lines being thrown around by devs - although this remains just an idea for now.

PUBG: Battlegrounds will also announce several exciting new collabs in the coming weeks, with “two highly sought-after vehicle IPs” teased, plus expect a Progressive Skin Weapon System to land further down the line.

Devs also hope to improve matchmaking balances this year, introduce a map rotation service, refine player engagement with bots, add new tiered rank rewards, and improve the game’s anti-cheat system.

All in all, there is plenty in the works. It sounds as if PUBG: Battlegrounds is on a very solid and productive path.
