Pokémon fans have had a first look at Game Freak’s new game, and they’re absolutely blown away by the new graphics.

Although mainly known for being the primary developer on the Pokémon series, Game Freak has also developed games outside of the popular creature catching RPGs.

During the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, it revealed its upcoming action RPG, Beast of Reincarnation.

It’s set in post-apocalyptic Japan, where you play as a cursed outcast who is humanity’s last hope against the twisted monsters who occupy the land.

Here’s the trailer below. I think it’s worth watching if only to compare with Game Freak’s Pokémon games, which have received criticism from fans in recent years for their flat art styles and poor performance.

“I saw Game Freak and was instantly ready to play,” wrote a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“Game Freak can cook when they aren’t on the insane Pokemon release schedule,” wrote another.

“How come they can do this, but they can't do the same but cartoony?” another reply wrote. “We get Pokemon Z-A with flat buildings, low res textures and loads of pop-in.”

An exact timeline hasn’t been confirmed yet, but Beast of Reincarnation has presumably been in development longer than the average cycle of a Pokémon game.

Recent Pokémon games get roughly three years in development, from the concept stage all the way to release, which is a little quick for games nowadays.

But it’s clear that Beast of Reincarnation has spent a little more time in the oven, which is how Game Freak has been able to impress audiences with this new trailer.

It may also be because it won't be hitting Switch, which gives Game Freak a lot of extra power to work with.

As for Switch 2, it's possible a port for the new Nintendo hybrid console could be confirmed later down the line.

Beast of Reincarnation releases on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 in 2026.
