On this fine Thursday, a gentle reminder - please, please take care of your consoles. There are few things more painful to look at than totally messed up pieces of tech, whether it’s due to heavy handling or a heavy build-up of filth. Don’t even get me started on dead bugs - some of those cleaning videos are genuinely difficult to watch.
Anyway, this morning I saw something awful, and now you have to see it too. On Reddit, user Polak5677 shared a series of pictures of a PS4 which has gotten absolutely covered in dust and dirt as a result of years of smoke damage. Viewers beware, it’s genuinely grim.
Before we get into it, take a look at this super satisfying restoration of an original PlayStation below.
Okay, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Behold, potentially the most disgusting thing you’ll see today. Polak5677 clarified that this isn’t their own console, by the way - they were cleaning it for someone else. They’re a far braver person than me for willingly touching that. Everything is either coated in dirt or stained brown - I can’t imagine what it sounded like when it was switched on.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that this thing had just been coated in a healthy layer of sawdust, but no - according to the poster, the poor console’s smell gave the real culprit away immediately. Shockingly, the whole thing cleaned up pretty well, and it still works perfectly. Let’s just hope that the owner of it doesn’t wait so long to get it cleaned again next time.

Unfortunately, console cleaning and restoration videos are far too common to put this down to a one-off issue. Admittedly, they can be satisfying to watch sometimes, but can we please all just make a conscious effort to make sure they don’t get like this in the first place?
