Halo fans are utterly heartbroken over a recent update that’s not going to make anyone happy.

In 2026, it not only marks the 25th anniversary of Microsoft launching the Xbox in 2021, but as a console launch title, it’s also the anniversary of Halo: Combat Evolved.

Under the guidance of the original developers of the series, Bungie, Halo reached iconic status in the video game industry, banging out classics such as the OG game, Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.

Sadly, however, with the franchise now being handled by Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries), the heights that Bungie achieved haven't come close to being replicated, and truth be told, it’s a worrying time to be a Master Chief fan.

Don’t get me wrong, 2021’s Halo Infinite was fine, it just wasn't great. As for Halo Studios' other attempts, namely Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians, the less said the better.

It’s fair to say that the Halo series and Master Chief deserve better, and surely, things will improve whether it’s Halo 7 or the rumoured remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, right?

Well, judging by this recent update regarding Halo Studios and Microsoft’s recent purge of employees, things are not looking overly optimistic for the beloved Xbox series.

According to a video game reporter, Rebs Gaming, confidence at Halo Studios is at an all-time low, with Microsoft reportedly looking to replace human employees with AI.

“No one at Halo Studios is confident with its next project currently, Microsoft is trying to replace many jobs with AI, says Rebs Gaming,” shared Redditor Moth_LovesLamp.

“Nope, don't like that,” replied Vaena with OwlProper1145 adding, “Microsoft seems to be all in on AI. No other major company seems to be pushing it like they are.”

“I get that greedy executives want to continue making gargantuan profits without having to pay the people who facilitated that by laying them all off and replacing them with AI,” exclaimed johncitizen69420.

“But what I don't understand is who they expect to buy the products when everyone is laid off and has no income,” they concluded.

“Damn, that’s depressing,” said shtevay, summing up this whole situation perfectly.

It should be said that these are unconfirmed rumours, so they should be taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise, but if true, I suspect it won’t surprise anyone.

Only time will tell what the future holds for the Halo series, but it might be safe to expect the worst and hope for the best.
