Halo Infinite has announced its final update will be coming later this month, and fans are pretty heartbroken to see the game be put to bed.

“With multiple Halo titles in development, we’ll need our whole team's combined focus to deliver new experiences with the same passion and care that our community has given us,” reads a blog post from Halo Studios released earlier this week.

“While we remain committed to supporting Halo Infinite on the road ahead, Operation: Infinite is the last major content update currently planned.”

Operation: Infinite adds a bunch of end-of-life content to keep Halo fans busy over the next year before the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved.

For example, Spartan Points and Career Rank will boost at twice the speed, which should help new players get up to speed should they decide to check the game out. There’s also a new 100-tier battle pass, as well as a new map and some more bonuses.

You can read about the full update here, which includes a detailed breakdown of what remains for Halo Infinite in the lead up to the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved next year.

So, at least the servers aren’t being shut down. Halo fans can at least continue to enjoy the game in the lead-up to whatever Halo 7 will be.

What do Halo fans think of the update?

“The shortest 10 years of my life,” reads one comment on the Halo Reddit page, referring to the fact that Microsoft’s original plan for the game included a 10-year live service plan. “Sad to see it being the last update. It could’ve been so much more.”

“Man I’m sad they never did any campaign dlc,” reads another comment. “The new campaign was actually INCREDIBLY fun.”

“They sold a live service game with little expectation of actually servicing it,” reads another comment. “They didn’t even have the staff to run a live service game. The leadership who let infinite get that far behind have all left with big golden parachutes while the IP went from the flagship of Xbox to a nostalgic cash grab.”

With active development on Halo Infinite being sunset, it’s almost certain that Halo Studios is now fully committed to developing the next mainline Halo title alongside the new remake of the first game.

With rumours that Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes are also planned, it could be an entirely new reboot of the series’ classic era.
