Halo: Campaign Evolved has unexpectedly become the final game Halo Studios ever makes, but it might be going out with a bang.
After several failed attempts to bring Halo back to its glory days, Xbox has finally taken the IP back and handed it off to Activision. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that yet, especially with all of that talk about a Master Chief origin story.
As for Halo: Campaign Evolved, though, it’s a sad affair. I actually loved this spirited and tasteful reboot and was excited to see what would be done with Halo 2 next, but clearly it wasn’t meant to be.
RebsGaming claims to have heard the devs involved will not be moved over to Activision to work on the next game, and will instead release one final content update before going elsewhere.
Halo: Campaign Evolved players hoping for competitive multiplayer are going to be disappointed
The upcoming update is expected to drop sometime in December around HaloFest and will add Theater Mode and Firefight to the game.

Theater Mode is one I’m all for. It’s become an iconic part of the series and instrumental for fan-made projects. Halo: Campaign Evolved even includes a Machinima mode.
Firefight, on the other hand, is going to be interesting. It obviously wasn’t a thing back when Halo: Combat Evolved launched in 2001, but has become a staple of the franchise since. Since Halo: Campaign Evolved borrows a lot from Halo: Reach, it’ll probably be a good fit for the remake, especially with varied enemy types like the Covenant, Flood and Sentinels.
However, I can’t help but feel a lick of disdain for the lack of traditional multiplayer. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the only way to play Halo: Combat Evolved’s now iconic PvP modes, and it would have been great to see it remade from the ground up.
Perhaps if Halo Studios wasn’t being dissolved, it would have been added one day, but any chance of that happening now will disappear when the studio does.
As always, take the above with a pinch of salt, as it’s only what RebsGaming has heard through his sources, which he didn’t disclose.
Halo 7 was on the agenda next before Xbox pulled the plug
Judging from what’s come out since Xbox announced a change of hands, Halo Studios were in the planning phases for the next mainline Halo game.
Taking place after the events of Halo: Infinite, released concept art depicts parts of Zeta Halo we didn’t see during Master Chief’s last excursion, along with more members of the new antagonist: The Endless.
Obviously, a few proof-of-concept images aren’t a lot to go off, but the plan for Halo 7 sounded interesting, to say the least.
With Activision only just getting its hands on the franchise, it’s probably going to be a while before we get another Halo game, meaning Halo: Campaign Evolved’s rumoured content update in December will have to tide us over in the meantime.
