This new sandbox RPG is one for fans of Valheim, Fallout and Resident Evil. What a frightful combo that is!

There are a ton of sandbox RPGs right now that attempt to jump on the survival bandwagon, and for players on the lookout, there is no shortage of offerings, for better or worse, especially when it comes to the Steam store.

That being said, if you’re a fan of RPGs with survival mechanics, such as the likes of Valheim and classic Fallout, with a hint of Resident Evil-inspired horror, then look no further than this new game called Nighthold, developed by 2 Zombie Games.

“Build shelters, interact with rescuees, battle against the Rot and raiders to survive another night in this sandbox RPG. Play Solo or team up with friends in online сo-op,” reads the synopsis of Nighthold on Steam.

“After a corporate starship crash, the crew is stranded on a harsh alien planet where, each night, the Rot rises from the ground — a mysterious phenomenon that destroys everything it can reach. To survive, the locals build elevated shelters known as ‘nightholds’.”

We’re thrilled to introduce a new game we've been working on — Nighthold.
A co-op sandbox RPG with survival elements.

Judging by its gameplay trailer, Nighthold (not to be confused with World of Warcraft) looks to have some promise, with crafting and survival mechanics presented in nice cell-shaded visuals.

Nighthold can be played on your lonesome or with other players online. It’s also described as being a cross-platform title, so I assume it will eventually be available elsewhere other than Steam.

Whether Nighthold plays as good as it looks remains to be seen. We’ll just have to find out when it’s released. Nighthold was announced in December 2024, so it’s already spent a decent time in development.

At the time of writing, Nighthold does not have a release date, but you can add it to your Steam wishlist to be notified of any updates.
