PC storefront Steam’s wide selection of free games can be overwhelming.
After all, just because a game is free, it doesn’t always necessarily make it worth playing.
One that most definitely is worth playing, however, is the recently launched Mawgate.
Despite its unassuming visuals, this bite-sized survival horror has been hailed as a solid 10 out of 10 by players.

Created by indie developers purrCheeze Games and Lucas Ljunggren, Mawgate centres around Maria Moore, who is wrongfully imprisoned in the grisly Mawgate Asylum.
“To survive she must do things she never thought herself capable of,” the synopsis teases.
In this dimly lit pixel-art experience, players will fight, puzzle solve, and “investigate the dark forces behind the asylum”. Spooky.
It’s imperative that Maria escapes, or else she might “be consumed by the madness of Mawgate”.
As for why Maria was imprisoned, well, the game is set within the 19th century and she was deemed too “hysterical” by society.
This is no ordinary asylum though. “Twisted creatures roam its halls” which you’ll undoubtedly have to fend off from time to time.

“To survive, Maria must explore the labyrinthine institution, uncover its secrets, and find the enigmatic director, Dr. Hawley, before it’s too late,” devs tease.
Maria doesn’t have much, but she’ll have to manage a small array of resources in order to stay alive as well as outmanoeuvre terrifying creatures and solve cryptic environmental puzzles.
The purrCheeze Games team comprises a group of students from the University of Skövde, so in picking up this title, you could be supporting the next generation of major game devs.
Mawgate is completely free-to-play and boasts a very respectable score of 92% on Steam, sitting at Positive. It is available on Steam only, so my apologies to console users.
Despite that 92% score, there are multiple players who feel this is the perfect experience, especially considering it can be completed in one to two hours.
“Nice story, Very engaging with a uniform design overall,” wrote one player. “OVERALL 10/10, all the love to the dev team.”
“Easily the most complete feeling free survival horror game I have played,” added another. “This game would absolutely be worth paying for, it's got a lot more polish than many games I HAVE paid for. The game does a good job with atmosphere and tone.”
One player even compared Mawgate to classic Resident Evil experiences.
“This game is soooo good,” they began. “Amazing athmosphere, the graphics are incredible and it really nails the creepy asylum vibes to a T!!! The combat is fun and engaging and the Resident Evil-like puzzles are very well done. It was really easy to immerse yourself in the environment and the almost maze-like layout. Just absolutely incredible in every sense of the word, 10/10.”
You can’t ask for more than that. Mawgate is available to enjoy now.
