The newly formed friendslop genre has taken the world by storm, even if the naming of it does feel a tad derogatory.
Friendslop is, if you’re unfamiliar, a term that refers to low-budget games often best enjoyed with friends that include co-op elements or physics-based chaos.
Don’t be skewed by the ‘slop’ part. Friendslop titles may be low-budget but they’re brilliant creations and heaps of fun.
Peak is arguably the most famous example, having launched last year. It sees players team up to scale a mountain leading to some hilariously devastating moments when something goes awry.

R.E.P.O, Lethal Company, Among Us, and RV There Yet are among some other examples.
There are plenty more on the way. I’ve got my eye on We Gotta Go, a co-op comedy horror where players have to reach the only bathroom in a haunted mansion before they, well, s**t themselves in fear.
Today though, it’s Hold Your King that I’d like to bring to your attention, a promising co-op platformer from Next Big Game Studio.
Designed for two to four players, Hold Your King tasks you with carrying a “short-tempered king through deadly medieval courses”.
As such, you should expect plenty of physics-based challenges.

“Dodge traps, maintain balance, and work together to reach the throne room. One wrong step, and the king might crown you with his rage,” the synopsis reads.
Players will be carrying the king on a stretcher which they can lift up and down as well as rotate - or you’ll be carrying the queen too if there are four-players involved.
If the king looks as if he’s about to roll off the stretcher, you are advised to “bonk” him, but you do so at your own risk. “Or be ready for whips and tantrums.”
You can only clear the path using the stretcher which includes knocking obstacles out of your way but again, this could anger the king.
It looks like great fun, featuring a similarly colourful art style to Peak.
Hold Your King is due to launch on Steam in the next few months, although an exact launch date remains unavailable.
Ahead of launch, though, you can sample a free demo on Steam. Already, that demo sits at 92% Positive reviews.
“Loved, I didn't get angry. Kidding. Got angry, but would love to play the full game,” remarked one player.
“Great demo,” added another, while someone stated, “Looks good, the only thing is I'd like to be able to hit my friends in game,” which is what friendslop is all about.
The full version of Hold Your King is slated for Q2 so we’re talking April to June, so given that April is already almost over, it should be ours before long.
Wishlist the game if you want to be kept up to date on its progress.
