Steam users can play a sequel to one of the best games ever made, for free, but they’re torn on whether it’s good or not.
When you consider some of the best games ever made you think of the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
However a game more deserving of a spot on that list is Persona 5 Royal, an action-RPG that serves as not only an excellent starting point for those looking to get into the Persona series, but also a great game to play if you’re not usually a fan of turn-based games or anime.
It’s currently available at no additional cost via PlayStation Plus Extra if you have a valid subscription.

Flying under many gamers’ radars though like the Phantom Thieves themselves is Persona 5: The Phantom X, a controversial spin-off/sequel that started life as a mobile game before getting a Steam release.
Featuring turn-based combat and slice-of-life social interaction content it’s a tricky game to critique, as while it isn’t meant to be a successor to Persona 5 Royal many players seemingly judge it like one.

It’s free-to-play on Steam so you’re encouraged to give it a go and decide for yourself, but if you check out the reviews you’ll see a war being waged between those who enjoy the game and those who despise it.
One positive review reads: “Pretty fun game if you're a Persona fan. Doesn't quite live up to the quality standards of P5R or P3R, but it's a free live-service game with frequent updates and events.
“If you like any characters from the Persona IP, or want to experience another take on the story of Persona 5, you'll probably enjoy playing this game.”
However a particularly scathing review says the complete opposite, reading: “This is an insult to Persona 5 and the whole franchise. Whoever thought Persona should be a gacha game should be fired.”
Some reviews take a middle-stance outlining its lack of quality compared to Persona 5 Royal, but praising the game’s story.
It’s quite a controversial title, but if you’re a fan of the Persona series it’s obviously worth a go since it’s free.
For those who are new to the series though Persona 5 Royal is your best bet if you want to give these games a try, and it’s regularly on sale for a steal. For the amount of hours you’ll sink into it full-price is also worth the plunge, but who doesn’t love a bargain?
