Enter the Croft

If you’re a fan of sprawling third-person RPGs, particularly those set in space, then you’ve come to the right place.

I’m imagining that many of us will be spending the next week totally devouring Team Asobi’s Astro Bot.

If you’re not though, I’d like to highlight a nice little experience that Steam users can enjoy for free.

Indie sandbox RPG Underspace launched earlier this year.

Developed by Pastaspace Interactive and published by Camlann Games, the game offers a Lovecraftian take on space, sending players into the Croft.

Here, they can assume whichever role they choose, from solo explorer to joining a well-organised crew of comrades, exploring the galaxy and avoiding its monstrous beings.

“Be a miner picking through crystallised bones of ancient star beasts, a trader hauling artifacts to far-flung outposts, a pirate robbing space trains, an explorer combing through lost stellar cities, or a hunter chasing down unknowable monstrosities that spew forth from the storms,” the synopsis teases.

“Brave violent weather, eldritch beasts, and the terrors of the unknown as you make your mark in the universe.”

ICYMI: Take a look at the aforementioned Astro Bot in action below.

Underspace consists of 16 main campaign missions, and there are 45 side quests, 36 bosses, and 114 star systems just to give you an idea of this game’s scale.

The stats don’t end there. There are 204 stations and 68 enemy types, with the main campaign lasting for around 15 hours.

It could take you up to 300 hours to reach full completion though.

It’s a good job that the game is fun then, garnering a ‘Very Positive’ Steam rating from players.

As a part of the ongoing Steam Space Exploration Fest, you can currently enjoy a demo of Underspace totally for free.

The event is running until 9 September, so do give it a go before it’s too late.

If you do like what you play, the game is on offer for £11.61, also until 9 September. After that, it’ll revert back to its regular price of £15.49, which is still very reasonable for 300 hours of content.
