The survival genre can so often be punishing and tiresome, but that’s not at all the case in Witchspire.
Developed by Envar Games, this cosy new open-world survival title has launched on PC storefront Steam in early access.
Blending the magic of Hogwarts Legacy with the creature-battling elements of Pokémon, it’s clear to see why many are having such a great time with this new release.
“Prepare to get lost in the hand-crafted world of Witchspire: a co-op open world witch adventure where you and your friends have been chosen to save corruption from spreading through the world,” begins the synopsis.

“Grow your powers, explore a vast world and form bonds with the creatures around you.”
There’s no specific goal in Witchspire. You can play alone or with friends, partaking in all of the usual cosy fare, including farming, potion brewing, and decorating.
This is a survival game, though, so you’ll also need to venture off to farm resources or battle creatures that stand in your way.
Witchspire is absent of grind as developers didn’t want this to be a tiresome survival experience.

You can, for example, send magical pickaxes to harvest resources or you can use your magical powers to levitate while in the game’s build mode, offering total freedom of movement.
There are Pokémon-esque characters dotted around the game’s world and while you need to best them in battle, you can then collect them as your own after.
“The wilderness is filled with fascinating creatures; defeat them in battle and collect their spirits. Build long-term bonds and guide their growth to support your play style and needs,” devs note.
There isn’t particularly a strong story in Witchspire, with the idea instead being that the game is what you make it.
You can track down ancient ruins though, plagued by corruption, to uncover lost lore about this world.
The game is off to a pretty decent start with a current approval rating of 82% on Steam.
“Witchspire is a very lovely game. From the simple yet colourful art style to the soft melodies playing faintly in the background, this is one of those games you jump into when you just want to relax for a while,” wrote one player.
“Love this game, running around and building my cute little witch cottage. Thank you for this beautiful game,” added another.
Someone declared, “This game is adorable and addictive. I usually get burnt out on survival crafting games fast, but this game has me addicted. Even in early access, there's sooo much to do. The art style is very pretty, and the music is satisfying and fits the vibe perfectly.”
Of course, as Witchspire remains in early access, you shouldn’t yet expect a perfect experience.
In fact, Envar Games recently outlined the game’s roadmap.
The first major update for Witchspire, ‘A Touch of Magic’ will introduce salvaging, emotes, a new building set, and new familiars, in addition to improving weapon crafting.
The next big update, ‘The Frozen Tundra’, will then add a compendium and beastiary, a new biome, the game’s third act, a new weapon type, more new familiars, and endgame content.
These are expected to land sometime this year. In 2027, the mysterious ‘Throne of Corruption’ will then arrive.
It’s a promising start for Witchspire and it sounds as if the game has a prosperous future.
