A classic game that combines elements of Silent Hill and Resident Evil is hitting Steam later this month.

Renegade Kid's Dementium: The Ward is a horror game dating back to the Nintendo DS in 2007, and takes various elements from different titles to create a disturbing atmosphere.

There's bits of Resident Evil and Outlast in here, not to mention a bit of Doom as well. On the whole, it's a pretty creepy game and one that seems to have stood the test of time.

Dementium is a horror where you're trapped in an abandoned hospital full of zombies, and you get various weapons and tools to defeat them while also trying to escape.

It's a rather simple premise, but considering the shortage of horror games available on the Nintendo DS at the time, it's one that is fondly remembered by Nintendo horror fans who played the game in 2007.

Following its release on DS, it received a remaster for the 3DS in 2015 which fixed several problems with the original game. That version was then used to create new versions on Nintendo Switch in 2023, as well as PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2024.

The Steam version will release on 27th October, 2025. Just in time for Halloween. And despite the aging graphics, it still looks just as tense and scary as it did back in 2007.

"Step into the twisted halls of Dementium: The Ward, the cult classic survival horror that redefined handheld terror, now remastered for PC supporting 4K resolution," reads the official description on Steam.

"Awakening alone in a derelict hospital with no memory of how you got there, you’ll confront grotesque creatures, unravel a chilling mystery, and struggle to survive with nothing but improvised weapons and your wits. Every flicker of light, every echo in the corridor, every drop of blood tells a story you won’t forget."

In addition to having modern resolution support, the game also has a retro-style 240P optional mode as well as optional CRT scan-lines to give it that proper classic analog horror vibe.

As revealed to Nintendo Life back in 2023, Renegade Kid boss Jools Watsham originally pitched Dementium to Konami as a Silent Hill game.

However, he was told rather dismissingly "We wouldn’t give the Silent Hill IP to a team like yours". It was then repurposed into an original game and released for the Nintendo DS.

Considering the recent apparent renaissance of the Silent Hill franchise, it might be a good idea to check out Dementium at some point too.
