Coffee Stain has announced that its open-world survival game Valheim is getting a PlayStation release.

Valheim originally released into Steam Early Access back in 2021, and saw a later release on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One in 2023.

After nearly five years of Early Access, Coffee Stain and Iron Gate have now announced that Valheim will be getting a PlayStation release, and we have a rough window for when to expect it.

Valheim is planning to be released onto PlayStation sometime in 2026, but a concrete date has not been confirmed yet.

It’s not confirmed if this announcement only includes PS5, or if PS4 players will also be able to play. Considering Valheim is available on Xbox One, it’s entirely possible that Iron Gate is pursuing a potential PS4 release in addition to PS5.

As is to be expected with early access titles, Valheim has had several major updates over the years, including the Hearth & Home update which improved the base-building and core survival mechanics, and Call to Arms that introduced major updates to combat.

By the time the PlayStation release comes around, Valheim will have been in early access for five years, but no confirmation on when the game is due to hit version 1.0 has been made yet.

Iron Gate estimated that the game would be done in 2025, as per its own wording on Steam: “It’s a pretty safe bet to say that Valheim will be in active development for at least another two years (counting from January 2023),” but no update has been made since then.

However, it looks like Iron Gate will not make that initial 2025 deadline (these things happen, and nobody can truly predict them), and is instead planning to release the 1.0 version for Valheim in 2026 following, or alongside, the PlayStation release.

In terms of what kinds of features will differ in the full release compared to early access, Iron Gate says that “The basic functionality of the game will remain pretty much the same, except Biome-specific gameplay challenges.

“What we will add is a ton of more content in the form of new biomes, new enemies, new bosses, and new materials to find. We want to expand the crafting system with new crafting stations, and more recipes.

“We also want to add more types of weapons and build-pieces so you can further customize your viking stronghold, and make it withstand new threats. In addition, we also plan to add more unique locations and events for you to find in the world of Valheim.”

Valheim is available now on PC, Mac, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
