PlayStation’s new handheld console, the PlayStation Portal, has made it into the hands of reviewers, and apparently, it’s pretty good.
Announced during the PlayStation Showcase earlier this year, the PlayStation Portal, then called Project Q, was revealed to be a handheld console that’d allow you to stream games from your PS5.

The only caveat is it relies solely on Wifi, meaning you can’t take it out of your house like a Nintendo Switch. This led to the console being relentlessly flamed by fans, many of whom mocked its flawed functionality, its price, and its overall design.
Despite this, the console’s preorders have done well, especially in Japan where units have already sold out prior to their release tomorrow, 15 November.
Reviews have also been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising it as a good bit of kit if you prefer playing games in other parts of your house. You’ll still need to have your PS5 switched on and connected but you’ll be able to play anywhere in your home, whether it be the bedroom, kitchen, spare room, bathroom, or wherever.
IGN gave the console an 8/10, saying they loved the “freedom it gives to play the PS5 from anywhere with decent Wi-Fi coverage.” This was seen to be especially useful when other family members used the same TV for other game consoles.

VGC gave it 4/5 stars, saying the hardware is “excellent, and it does exactly what it advertises” with the main drawback being it won’t be very useful for the majority of people.
Over at TechRadar Gaming, the new hardware received 5 stars, being called “an essential PS5 accessory for Remote Play users”, as well as praising its “ergonomic design, portability, and exceptional remote play performance.”
Finally, CNET gave an unscored review, saying “For a PS5 owner who craves a great portable for remote play, and has the budget, this may not be a weird buy at all.”
Overall it sounds like the PlayStation Portal is worth getting if you can justify it. Again, it won’t be useful to everyone, but if there are a lot of people living in your household and only one TV, it provides another option to play the latest PS5 games for a decent price.
