Sony PlayStation is reportedly relaunching new handheld hardware this year, and one big upgrade will solve a major issue fans had with the OG PlayStation Portal.

Now in the ninth console generation, Sony PlayStation has continued to be a major player, and a reason for that is by bringing new innovative ways for its consumers to enjoy its products.

One of those innovations came with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2004, which was basically a handheld PS2. The success of the PSP was followed up with the superior PS Vita in 2011, which could be considered as a handheld PS3.

Sadly, despite the PS Vita being a fantastic little console and having bags of potential, Sony seemingly lost interest in the hardware way before it was discontinued eight years later.

Sony Re-Entered the Handheld Console Market in 2023

With the 'failure' of the PS Vita, many gamers would have assumed Sony was done with handheld consoles. But to much surprise in 2023, the PlayStation Portal was released.

However, unlike the PSP and the PS Vita, the PlayStation Portal does not play physical games. Instead, it plays them through your PlayStation 5 via remote play.

Initially, you could only access these games if your PS5 was switched on. But in 2025, that feature was improved by allowing PS Plus Premium members to stream from the cloud, making the library of games more accessible.

With that in mind, Sony hasn't stopped making improvements to the PS Portal. That being said, rather than making improvements to the existing model, a new version will reportedly have an OLED screen.

Video game industry insider KeplerL2 claimed on NeoGAF that a newly revised OLED model is on the way.

Of course, this hasn't been confirmed by Sony, so this speculation should be taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise.

The current PlayStation Portal has an eight-inch LCD screen that is capable of playing games at 1080p and 60 frames per second. Obviously, that performance can vary depending on the signal. KeplerL2 did not tease any further details.

If the next PlayStation Portal does have an OLED screen, which isn't outside the realm of possibility, it could mean that the graphics will look better and the pixel rate should perform more smoothly.

Hopefully, now that this detail is out in the wild, Sony might officially announce the newly revised PlayStation Portal in the coming weeks and months. If that happens, we’ll be sure to update you right away.
