PlayStation to reportedly drop new console in 2026

Too soon?

PlayStation is apparently planning to release another console in 2026, one that could rival the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo is set to release its new gaming console this June, just a few weeks away, and it’s powerful handheld mode has seemingly prompted other gaming companies to produce their own consoles you can play on the go.

Check out the Nintendo Switch 2 below.

Xbox has partnered with ASUS to make a handheld gaming device, and now Sony is seemingly following suit as it’s rumoured a full-blown portable PlayStation device is on the way.

Not much is known about it just yet, apart from it’ll be different to the PlayStation Portal as it’ll be able to run independently from the PlayStation 5.

While the PlayStation Portal is a decent bit of kit, you need to be connected to the same network as your PlayStation 5 to use it, meaning it’s useless for those who want to play games fully on the go.

The leaker who first shared the news told fans that their sources stated a 2026 release date for the new console but, of course, take this with a bit of salt.

It doesn’t sound too far-fetched of a theory though, as no doubt Sony would want to improve upon the design of the PlayStation Portal and there’s clearly a market for portable gaming right now; it makes sense that it would want a piece of that pie.

If 2026 is the planned release date, we might see something shared about it towards the end of this year, likely through a PlayStation Showcase or perhaps a shadow-dropped announcement on X like Sony has done with some of its PlayStation 5 revisions.

Either way, it sounds exciting, but if I’m honest, I don’t think either the PlayStation handheld nor the Xbox one will be able to compete with the Nintendo Switch 2.
