PlayStation’s latest PlayStation Portal console update has gone down well with its owners, who might actually get some use out of the system now.
I remember when the PlayStation Portal was first announced it was severely roasted by fans and for good reason.
Aside from not being much of a looker, a handheld system that requires a constant connection to a PlayStation 5 was laughable, especially in comparison to the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck.
Once the dust settled though the value of the PlayStation Portal was a bit more apparent, as while it doesn’t have widestream appeal it does cater to PlayStation 5 owners who share their console with others in the household, and those who don’t want to sit in front of a TV.

Now the handheld system is even better, as previously you could only stream games on PlayStation Plus provided you had the right membership. Now you can stream a select number of games from your own library with more on the way.
This doesn’t fix one of the biggest problems with the PlayStation Portal, which is how it requires PlayStation Plus Premium to stream games, but it does make the deal a little better now that you can play non-PlayStation Plus games.

Reactions to the update have gone down well, with a post by LEX-CARTER saying: This update is insane! GREAT JOB SONY!”
Other PlayStation Portal owners followed up with their own takes, like one who said: “This should have been a feature from the start. Better late than never, I reckon.”
“I love my portal from Day 1 and they keep making it better. Totally worth my premium subscription to not even have to worry about my PS5 connection getting to wherever I am just stream from the cloud. Heavenly,” read another.
It’s worth noting that with a subscription to PlayStation Plus Premium you can also cloud-stream games on your PlayStation 5. You need a pretty good internet connection to get the benefits of cloud-streaming though.
Future PlayStation Handhelds
Looking towards the future it’s said PlayStation is looking into another handheld device to launch alongside the PlayStation 6.
Rumours suggest this won’t be a second iteration of the PlayStation Portal, rather an entirely new handheld that actually functions like a console such as the Nintendo Switch 2. It’s said the device will even have a dock so you can connect it to a TV.
If it’s true, by 2027/2028 we’ll have a handheld for every major player in the video game industry, PlayStation, Xbox and of course Nintendo.
