Sony Hardware Update is a Major Boost to the PlayStation Portal

The handheld just got even better

The PlayStation Portal has come a long way since it was first launched back in 2023 and now thanks to another major update, the Sony handheld has never been better.

Allowing PlayStation 5 users to stream their games via Wi-Fi through remote play, the PlayStation Portal revolutionised the handheld genre by offering something different compared to hardware such as the Nintendo Switch.

By using remote play, owners are able to stream their console games whilst being away from the television but the PlayStation Portal still offers everything that the base PlayStation 5 does, such as DualSense-style controls and a 1080p screen.

When it was first launched, the PlayStation Portal only allowed users to access supported games on the PS5 but an update back in November introduced Cloud streaming support, allowing players to access their library on the go.

Now Sony is back with yet another update for the PlayStation Portal which is centered around faster navigation, in-game purchases, and seamless play.

Thanks to a redesigned home page, players are now able to switch between UI menus a whole lot faster and with purchases now instant, there is no more waiting around.

Additionally, in-game purchases are now available which will allow you to buy DLC, skins, and virtual currency during your gameplay instead of having to do it through your PlayStation 5 or other means.

It is also worth mentioning that the PlayStation Portal has welcomed multiple performance improvements and stability enhancements over its life span.

This includes the ability to capture gameplay by taking screenshots or videos, an auto-pause feature which will pause your gaming session if you are inactive, a way to easily find particular titles in the Cloud catalogue, and much more.

However, users still report multiple issues with the Sony handheld which they hope will be improved over the next few years.

For one, being able to access the Cloud is all well and good but as of right now, it is only accessible for those with a PlayStation Plus subscription which is of course an extra cost on top of the price you are paying for the Portal.

Additionally, a strong and solid Wi-Fi connection must be available at all times if you do not want your performance to be impacted.

However, there is no denying that the PlayStation Portal is a remote play handheld which continues to offer improvements to its users.

Thanks to regular updates and offering the chance to game on the go, the Sony handheld may just make for the perfect present this Christmas.
