It looks like PlayStation 5 Pro users are set to get a massive framerate boost, with a new major system update coming soon.
The PS5 Pro is already a powerhouse of a vehicle for PlayStation games, offering massive boosts to performance, resolution, and graphical quality.
One of the console’s biggest features is the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), which is a deep learning-based image upscaling technology to basically improve the picture quality of games without stressing out the GPU too much.
It’s a rather great feature for PlayStation games that don’t quite hit the performance targets that players may expect of them, with the 4k60fps dream being all the more attainable.

PSSR also appears to be set for an alleged upgrade in the next few months, according to a new report by PlayStation insider GUST_fan on X (formerly Twitter).
The report alleges that the PS5 Pro will be getting “PSSR 2.0” later this year, with the apparent upgrades to image quality and performance being “improved compared to before”.
The update will see games that were previously limited to around 70-80fps now seeing higher frame rates, so more games should hit the 120fps ceiling.

Low-resolution classic games, such as PS1, PS2, and PSP games from PlayStation Plus Premium could also be upscaled to higher resolutions.

This will apparently be achieved with a new feature being added to PS5 Pro systems, which GUST_fan describes as being “very similar to FSR4”.
FSR4 Technology Could Be Coming To PS5 Pro
For those of you unaware, FSR4 stands for FidelityFX Super Resolution, which is adds upscaling and frame generation to games to allow them to perform better on weaker hardware.

Whether all of this is true or not remains to be seen, as Sony has not confirmed this feature to be added to PS5 Pro consoles yet. So for now, we’ll wait and see if this gets announced by an official source.
GUST_fan claims the update will drop between “January to March”, so there’s no specifics available yet on when this will be available.
The PlayStation 5 Pro launched in September 2024, and in addition to PSSR, also includes improved ray-tracing capabilities, a GPU 45% faster than the PS5’s, and 2TB of internal storage.
Its launch price of $699 / £699 saw some controversy back when it first came out, with many calling the price too high for what it offered.

However, considering the increase in raw power, I’d say there were some pretty decent upgrades here added by the PS5 Pro that has allowed Sony to justify the price increase.
