PlayStation’s State of Play showcase came and went on 2 June and while it wasn’t the worst show we’ve seen, it felt like there was a lot missing.
God of War Laufey was an exciting reveal as was a closer look at Marvel’s Wolverine. Plenty of new games were announced too that we’ll be keeping a close eye on later down the line.
One game that continues to shine no matter how many times it’s shown off though is Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which you can play for free right now.
Fresh off the success of Game of the Year contenders Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata, Capcom’s next game is Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a sequel to the critically-acclaimed action-adventure series.
A new trailer for the game was shown off at State of Play along with the announcement that a free demo was to be released right then and there.

It’s now available to download from the PlayStation Store but you’ll also find it on Xbox and PC via Steam.
The demo is only around 10GB too so it’s not going to take up too much of your precious storage space.

It’ll give you a taste of the game’s story but more importantly the combat. This soul-absorbing samurai game looks like one of the hottest games of 2026 so far and that’s saying a lot when you look at just how many games are launching this year.
Like a lot of titles announced during PlayStation’s State of Play event Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be launching in September, specifically 25 September. A lot of 2026 releases are doing this, probably because they don’t want to go toe-to-toe with Grand Theft Auto VI.
Once you’ve had your fun with the demo, you’ll of course have to wait for the full game’s launch, but over the summer, you’ll actually be able to play one of Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s successor titles.
During the State of Play showcase, PlayStation announced four titles coming to PlayStation Plus in the coming months.
One of these titles was a Runescape game which will launch as a day-one title but the other three are PlayStation 2 games joining the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics catalogue.
The trio will see a staggered release with Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams dropping onto the service in August 2026, just in time for the next game’s launch a month after.
It'll be worth a go if you plan on checking out the sequel, as while it’ll undoubtedly show its age, PlayStation 2 titles rarely go out of style.
As cool as Onimusha is, however, it had no chance of beating the hyped reveal of God of War Laufey.
