When it comes to beloved JRPGs, few franchises are as iconic as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series. The legendary RPG franchise has remained one of the biggest names in gaming since its debut on the NES in 1987, inspiring countless games and generations of players along the way.

Final Fantasy has evolved dramatically over the decades, with fans now eagerly awaiting the conclusion to the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy in 2027. But before that epic finale arrives, this free Steam RPG demo offers fans a chance to take a nostalgic trip back to the classic era of Final Fantasy.

Another Eden Begins is a must-play Final Fantasy-style retro JRPG

The free JRPG you can download and play on Steam right now is Another Eden Begins, developed and published by indie studio Wright Flyer Studios. The retro-inspired JRPG also gives off some serious Chrono Trigger vibes, which should come as no surprise given its connections to the beloved classic that helped define the genre in the 1990s. The demo includes the first six chapters of its story.

“Aldo and his younger sister, Feinne, enjoy a peaceful life in the idyllic village of Baruoki until one day, when Feinne is taken by the Beast King. Aldo pursues them into the Moonlight Forest, but following a fierce battle with a beast, he is sent through a tear in spacetime—and finds himself in a world 800 years in the future,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam.

The full version of Another Eden Begins promises plenty of replay value, with a New Game Plus mode that carries over your upgrades, alongside more than 10 different endings for players to discover.

Another Eden Begins comes with plenty of pedigree, with Masato Kato at the helm of its development.

Kato has previously worked on some of the most celebrated JRPGs of all time, including Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger, giving Another Eden Begins an impressive creative pedigree from the outset. With that kind of talent behind it, there’s every reason for JRPG fans to keep a close eye on this upcoming release.

Another Eden Begins release date: When is the new JRPG coming out?

At the time of writing, Another Eden Begins is scheduled to release on September 16, 2026.

The JRPG is currently listed for PC and Nintendo Switch, with no PlayStation or Xbox versions announced at this time. Hopefully, that changes further down the line. We'll have our fingers crossed.

It might be worth following Another Eden Begins on social media, just in case the developers announce plans to bring the JRPG to PlayStation or Xbox in the future.

As for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, that will be released in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
