Horror game fans after something a little more retro ought to check out the demo for Stigmata, which has just been released on Steam.
Developed by ValtiGames, Stigmata is a psychological horror experience played from a first-person perspective where you play as a man exploring an abandoned city.
According to the game's store page description, Stigmata is intended to be a "classic survival horror experience" in a similar vein as many retro shooters.
That means the game has low-poly PS1-style graphics, where models and surfaces have a lower number of polygons to create a retro feel.

Combined with the dark atmosphere and low visibility of Stigmata's world, you've got a horror atmosphere that feels claustrophobic and intimate, much like older horror games like Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill.
But with all that said, what is the game actually about?
In Stigmata, you play as a man who finds himself alone in a city where reality is "beginning to unfold". On your journey, you must fight, explore, and manage resources to survive, all while you "step into the confession booth and face the one who watches."

As the city you explore has become "unraveled by reality", there will be a huge number of different unseen horrors which you can either fight or flee from.
The game's different nightmares exist around every corner, so you'll always have to be on your guard, making use of the various guns and melee weapons you're given to help defend yourself.
As resources are limited, you'll have to make every round count. Scavenge for more items and ammunition, and ensure that you're fully prepared to stay alive in this hostile place.
In addition to that, Stigmata also includes a series of puzzles and obstacles that you'll need to solve, promising that you won't overcome the trial through sheer force alone.
Stigmata is inspired by some of the classic horror greats that you could play in the 1990s such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or Alone in the Dark.
It's an aesthetic that has proven to be quite popular over the years, with games like Abiotic Factor, Nightmare Kart, and Angeline Era being among the games which use this unique visual style.
If you'd like to check out the demo for Stigmata, you can play it now by downloading it from Steam.
