As well as handing out prestigious video game awards, The Game Awards 2023 was packed with surprise announcements and one perhaps stole the show more than any other.

The surprise announcement in question was God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla, DLC which arrives next week for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The actual news itself of the God of War Ragnarök DLC is not so surprising, after all, there have been previous reports that DLC or an expansion is on the way. However, what did take people by surprise is that this DLC is free with no need for even PS Plus.

Check out the God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla trailer below!

In our review of God of War Ragnarök, we said it’s: “a fantastically impressive sequel that delivers in every conceivable way. It expands on and improves the formula established in 2018’s God of War hugely, offering up blistering action, gut-wrenching twists, and truly cinematic boss battles with real emotional heft behind them.”

God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla takes place after the events of the main game. Accompanied by his trusty and knowledgeable friend Mimir, Kratos must now overcome “trials within himself and face echoes of his past,” in this new roguelite mode. God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla will encourage players to “master different aspects of Kratos’ arsenal as you face new combinations of enemies and some surprises along the way!”

The challenge of Valhalla will not be an easy one and Kratos will fall. However, each time Kratos falls he is respawned at the gates of Valhalla ready to battle once more and hopefully this time with a new strategy in mind. What’s more, the more players progress in Valhalla, the more resources and upgrades will be unlocked to hopefully give you an added edge against your opponents.

God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla will have five difficulty choices in total. The higher the difficulty, the more prestigious rewards you will gain. Furthermore, while God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla is said to be a separate experience from the main game, developers of Santa Monica Studios still recommend that you finish the main game first to avoid spoilers.

Speaking of which, Santa Monica Studios thanked fans for their support with God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla being the team's gift to us all. “On behalf of everyone at Santa Monica Studio, we want to wish everyone a happy holiday and extend our heartfelt gratefulness for the incredible support you’ve shown us over the past year. We truly are fans of our fans, and we hope you enjoy God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla when it comes out next week,” said the developers.
