God of War fans are losing it over a rumoured 2026 return featuring everyone’s favourite god slayer, Kratos.

The God of War franchise is one of the most popular properties on PlayStation, which is why whenever there’s talk of a new release, it sends fans of the Santa Monica Studio series into a meltdown.

In 2018, the God of War series had somewhat of a reboot on PlayStation 4 with a new direction in cinematic presentation and a change in camera perspective, adopting the over-the-shoulder view.

God of War (2018) is not only a gorgeous game to look at, but its combat is ever-so sweet.

In 2022, we were then treated to the sequel, God of War Ragnarök and without giving too much away, it left the story on quite the cliffhanger; now, fans eagerly await a conclusion.

However, before we’re treated to the yet-to-be-announced follow-up to God of War Ragnarök, we might be getting a spin-off game inspired by a surprising sub-genre.

Earlier this month, a rumour made the rounds that suggested a God of War ‘metroidvania’ game is in the works, said to be on a much smaller scale than the main games in the series.

Yet, a new rumour related to the God of War metroidvania game is now in motion, claiming that it’s been pushed back into 2026. This, of course, makes us assume that there was a possibility it could have been released this year.

The recent rumour is courtesy of video game journalist and industry insider Jeff Grubb, as claimed in a recent episode of his podcast on YouTube, and fans have reacted accordingly.

“2026 looking is stacked, ngl,” tweeted newerwrld.

“If so, I'm getting it!” declared AlroSaiyan.

“God of War and GTA VI in the same year, I'm going broke,” exclaimed iamsajeel.

“PLEASEEEEEEE, WE WANT MOREEE,” ReginaR62059701 shouted.

It’s worth keeping in mind that all unconfirmed rumours should be taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. But if Sony announces this rumoured God of War game, we’ll update you as soon as that happens.
