It looks like a new God of War game will be announced soon, but it might not be what you think.
Ever since God of War was first released on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, it has not only become one of the best hack-and-slash games to rival the likes of Capcom’s Devil May Cry but also established itself as one of Sony’s leading new IPs.
Twenty years have passed, and it’s fair to say that Kratos has matured a lot. Sure, he’s still a ruthless badass, but now he’s had the chance of fatherhood once more with Atreas, now residing in Scandinavia, he might think twice before ripping your head off, if you’re lucky.

The most recent entry in the series is God of War Ragnarök in 2022, which was then followed up by its fantastic free DLC, Valhalla, the following year. I won’t say much, but the ending of both stories at least leaves the door open for one more tale of its Norse saga.
Since that time, we’ve also heard rumours of not only a third game that could take us to regions of South America or Egypt, but even a remake or remasters of the original trilogy.
However, the most recent rumour suggests that the next God of War game will not only be a spin-off, but it will venture into a different genre from what we’re used to.
As brought to our attention by Push Square, Insider Gaming journalist and leaker of information, Tom Henderson, was asked by a follower on Twitter whether he thinks that a new God of War game will be revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play event later today.

“Hearing a lot of scuttlebutt about the 2.5D/metroidvania game or whatever it will be, yeah. Seems to be much smaller in scale than what I initially thought,” Henderson replied.
Then, fellow journalist and leaker of information, Jeff Grubb, chimed in by simply saying, “Yeah.” Jeff Grubbs' one-word response seemingly backs up claims made by Tom Henderson.

While surprising, I think a 2.5D/metroidvania God of War game could work, especially if it's to a similar standard to the likes of Dead Cells, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night or Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
Of course, it’s worth keeping in mind that these are currently unconfirmed rumours, so we should take them with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. Hopefully, we’ll find out the truth by the end of the day.
State of Play will air at 10pm UK time tonight on the official PlayStation YouTube and Twitch channels. It’s said to last about 40 minutes and will provide news on upcoming PS5 titles.
