God of War fans are getting themselves worked up about tonight’s big presentation, because they believe that the long-rumoured spin-off game may finally be making an appearance.
Even though it’s only been three years since Santa Monica Studio dropped the last God of War game, which is less than the time between God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, PlayStation fans are still restlessly waiting for a new entry in the franchise.
Following Sony’s announcement that a new 35-minute-long State of Play is going to be held at 10 PM (UK time) tonight, fans are, naturally, whipping themselves into a frenzy regarding a possible God of War-shaped announcement.
However, unlike Bloodborne fans (apologies in advance for the friendly fire), God of War fans have a pretty good basis for their hype.

It seems we can’t go a single month without hearing some sort of new God of War leak, but one specific rumour keeps making the rounds (and it’s even been corroborated by some of the most trustworthy sources in the industry).
Over on the r/GodofWar subreddit, fans seem pretty certain that the “Metroidvania”-esque spin-off is set to make an appearance at State of Play.
“2.5D metroidvania game is rumoured to show up here”, commented user ProfessionalForm679.
“We got GoW in 2022 we are not getting a new one. III to 18 was 5 years unless they had stuff mapped out it’s not next year bro”, replied user memsterboi123.

“It’s more likely to be that spinoff 2d game that was rumoured a while back wasn’t it?” commented user Englishgamer1996.
In case you’ve somehow managed to dodge this one until now, here’s the rough rundown.
As corroborated by both Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson and Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, the next God of War title is going to be a 2.5D Metroidvania title, assumedly in the style of something like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
The info has been all over the place surrounding this one, with other leakers stating that it’ll be set in Greece. Also, nobody can seemingly agree on whether or not it’ll actually be developed by Santa Monica Studio.

Personally, I think this one is very much real, but I wouldn’t trust any of the info beyond what both Henderson and Grubb have stated.
Whether or not it’ll show up at the State of Play tonight is an entirely different matter altogether. Just expect the worst, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised if anything does actually show up.
