PlayStation quietly drops 600-hour free game, RIP my social life

PlayStation drops a smash hit open-world RPG on PS Plus that can consume 600 hours of our life, so say goodbye to being publicly social.

Yesterday, Sony revealed the 10 new games that are coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium later this month, and to be honest, it’s one of the best PS Plus line-ups we’ve seen in a while.

Two of the headline games for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium for July 2025, in my opinion, are CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 and the supernatural action-adventure, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, from DON’T NOD.

However, there is another game included in the newly announced PlayStation Plus offerings, and that’s a huge open-world RPG, developed and published by Amazon Games, that became one of the most successful titles during its initial 2023 launch year.

That RPG in question is New World, which later added the subtitle of “Aeternum” when it arrived on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2024.

“Experience a thrilling action RPG set on the supernatural island of Aeternum. Forge your destiny on an adventure filled with danger and opportunity,” reads the synopsis of New World: Aeternum.

When New World: Aeternum originally launched on PC in 2023, according to SteamDB, this MMORPG achieved a concurrent player peak of a whopping 913,634.

What’s more, on HowLongtoBeat.com, a website that gathers data on how long it might take to finish any particular video game, some players were spending well over 600 hours with New World: Aeternum.

So it’s fair to say that even with New World: Aeternum alone, PlayStation Plus subscribers are getting a lot of bang for their buck this month.

“New World taking 600 hours?” asked the surprised Reddtor, lottrooster.

“I'm hyped for New World. The gameplay always looked fun,” said Schwarzer_Exe.

New World: Aeternum will be available at no extra cost for those who subscribe to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium on Tuesday, 15 July 2025. When that day comes, we might as well say goodbye to our social life.
