Some PlayStation fans aren’t too happy with a recent video stating that the PlayStation 6 will make what they believe are minimal improvements to the console’s hardware, but are people asking a bit too much of Sony?
Last week, Digital Foundry’s Alexander Battaglia spoke about his expectations for Sony’s next-generation of PlayStation consoles.
During a segment of one of DF’s latest podcast episodes, Battaglia was quizzed as to how many gigabytes of RAM he believes the PlayStation 6 might ship with.
"I think Sony, who is going to have a more traditional console, where they have direct control over the [operating system], direct control over the apps that are possibly run while the game is there... I think they're gonna have a minimum of 24 [gb of ram], and maybe a maximum of around 24…” Battaglia revealed.

“What they're doing already within that 16 is great,” he continued, “and they're gonna need more for the potential on hardware machine learning they're gonna do... but I think the rest of it, I think modern textures are incredible, but there's only so many art assets we can throw in a game…”
Well, some PlayStation fans over on the r/playstation subreddit aren’t best pleased with this theory, with the poster of one thread stating: “So groundbreaking improvements over ps5. So why release it?”
“24 feels like nothing when weve always doubled (if nit more) RAM than the previous console, so Im hoping at least it has good hardware to accommodate for it”, commented user RockRik.
“By the time PS6 comes out, there will be phones with more RAM”, replied user Beginning-Lettuce847.

“What’s the point? PS5 is doing just fine, there’s literally no reason to release a new console anytime soon.”
So, I do think that, on paper, 24GB of RAM does sound a little low.
However, those that are stating that it’s not actually an improvement over the PlayStation 5’s 16GB of RAM clearly cannot count.
There’s a cost issue that goes into designing video game consoles, and I think Battaglia might be spot on with his analysis here.

If Sony does end up releasing the PS6 with 24GB of RAM, it’s not a choice they’d make lightly. Adding an extra 16GB of RAM on to the PS6 could increase its price upwards of £50. They want to make sure the system is, at the very least, affordable for modern consumers.
