PlayStation 5 system update just added a seriously divisive new feature

PlayStation 5's latest system update is available to install right now, but it includes one feature that not everyone is sold on.

If you missed it, PlayStation announced the new system update yesterday. Among other things, PlayStation 5 gamers can now adjust the brightness of the console's built-in LED, and enjoy improved DualSense mic noise cancellation. Sadly, we're still no closer to getting custom themes back, if you were wondering.

While a lot of the latest system update has been relatively well received, there's one feature that fans are especially torn on: the DualSense controller speakers are now louder.

In theory this is great. The DualSense controller speakers are generally used to create a more immersive experience, adding in-game sounds like the flick of a blade in Ghost Of Tsushima, or the thwip of a web in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth it's most infamously used for allowing Chadley - the worst person in the world - to drone on at you endlessly.

Over on the PS5 subreddit fans are arguing over how necessary it was to make the DualSense speakers even louder.

"Chadley's already blowing out my speakers and now you’re making him LOUDER?!" wrote one gamer.

"Who the hell is using controller speakers?" another asked.

It's not all bad, however, as a third added: "The controller speaker sounds way better (louder?) from what I've heard so far. Playing Ghost of Tsushima and it's massively different from how it sounded last night when I was playing."

My suspicion is that the controller being louder will be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how the speakers are actually used. I can see clearer audio in a game like Ghost Of Tsushima being really cool. But anything that amplifies Chadley should be feared and avoided at all costs.
