God of War creator Santa Monica Studio reportedly has a secret game in development that could land as soon as next year.

After the recent State of Play, you’d be right for thinking that Santa Monica Studio has its hands full.

While development is clearly complete on the shadowdropped God of War: Sons of Sparta, it will have occupied much of the last several years of the studio’s time, plus there’s post-launch support to consider.

Beyond this, Santa Monica confirmed that it’ll be remaking all three games in the original God of War Trilogy, although stressed that particular project was very early in development.

It’s with all of this in mind that I didn’t expect we’d be hearing much more about the studio for quite some time.

By all accounts though, every insider in existence is claiming that Santa Monica has secretly been working on a third project - and it could launch as soon as 2027.

A New Santa Monica Studio Game Is Reportedly Set to Launch Next Year

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier previously confirmed that the game is being directed by God of War and God of War Ragnarök’s Cory Barlog, but added that it’s not a new IP or a sci-fi game, as was originally rumoured.

“It's not a new IP but it might feel like one,” he wrote.

Tom Henderson, at one point in time, claimed a mainline God of War was in development with Egyptian elements.

Santa Monica is clearly, as proved by the State of Play, going all-in on God of War, but would an Egyptian entry ”feel” like a new IP?

Well, in the latest round of leaks, NateTheHate took to Twitter/X to say that “Cory is working on his own project”.

“We will hear about it before 2027,” he added. “Unless a major delay happens, the game will be out in 2027.”

Elsewhere, shinobi602 surfaced on Resetera writing, “Not that far (Barring any delays of course).”

He continued, “Like I said given the quarter they're targeting, I do expect that. Probably May State of Play or the summer Keighleys (SGF). As of now I don't know yet. If not by then, then they've either pushed the release out further or doing a shorter reveal to release.”

I do have to urge you to take all of this information with a hefty pinch of salt, but it’s hard to see this as baseless.

They say there’s no smoke without fire and my god, there’s a lot of smoke here.

There’s a couple of possibilities as to what this game could be if it’s not a new IP.

Personally, I can’t see it being a new mainline God of War but we cannot rule it out.

Regardless of the mythology you send Kratos to, would that really change the feel of the franchise that drastically that it felt like a new IP?

I’d love to be wrong but I can’t see it, unless it’s a spin-off focusing on another character then there’s room for more of a fantasy feel.

The other option is that Santa Monica could be rebooting a classic franchise from elsewhere within Sony.

This one’s definitely going to generate some interesting theories as we await that reveal.
