The man responsible for designing the PlayStation 5 just announced exactly what we’ll be seeing in the console’s next update, and it sounds like a big one.
If you aren’t familiar with his work, you might think it sounds like I’m exaggerating when I refer to Mark Cerny as the backbone of PlayStation.
He’s been working with Sony since the mid 90s, and he’s responsible for helping to design basically every console and handheld that the gaming giant has had a hand in since the PlayStation 2.
So that’s why his recent comments in an interview with Tom’s Guides’ Alex Wawro hold so much weight, and why so many refer to him as the “architect” of PlayStation.

Cerny spoke to Tom’s Guides about his work on Project Amethyst, a collaborative project between Sony and AMD that’s been in the works since 2023. During said interview, Cerny had something pretty interesting to say about the PlayStation 5 Pro’s next big update.
“The algorithm [AMD] came up with could be implemented on current-generation hardware," Cerny revealed.
“So the co-developed algorithm has already been released by AMD as part of FSR 4 on PC. And we're in the process of implementing it on PS5 and it will release next year on PS5 Pro.”
“This is not for proprietary technology," Cerny continued.

“This is really trying to move the industry forward. Obviously we want to use these technologies on our consoles, but these technologies are available to any of AMD's customers freely.”
If you don’t know what FSR 4 is, here’s the simple version: it’s AI-powered upscaling technology. It’ll make games look nicer and run faster at the same time.
Obviously as far as the PlayStation 5 is concerned, that’s a pretty big deal, as FSR 4 is already the upscaling method of choice for most PC users.
Hopefully when he said the update will release “next year”, he meant sometime in January…
