Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t result in an explosion of CRPGs as many of us expected might be the case, but there’s a very good reason for that.

Creating a CRPG isn’t an easy feat to pull off, as the developers of the upcoming Starfinder: Afterlight previously told me.

Developed by Epictellers Entertainment, Starfinder: Afterlight is an adaptation of Paizo’s Starfinder TTRPG, with devs citing Baldur’s Gate 3, Guardians of the Galaxy, Pathfinder, and Divinity Original Sin II as additional inspirations.

I’ve previously had the chance to both virtually preview the title and sit down with the game’s cast and developers, and it’s all left me quite excited for what Starfinder: Afterlight has to offer.

It’s a branching narrative party-based experience where the titular ‘afterlight’ risks shrouding the galaxy in darkness.

When Captain Khali, voiced by Carolina Ravassa, goes missing with vital information on stopping this from happening, it’s up to you to put a stop to this unfortunate eventuality.

Starfinder: Afterlight is about to launch its first ever public alpha test so, of course, I have to fill you in on how you can get involved.

The Free Alpha Playtest Offers Up To One Hour of Gameplay

The playtest will offer 45 to 60 minutes of gameplay with developers inviting feedback from the community.

It offers a slice of the beginning of this adventure, with players able to pick from three pre-made characters: a human soldier, a vesk envoy, and a shirren operative.

You’ll experience a slither of the game’s voice cast as Neil Newbon’s Preach and James Alexander’s Sterling are in the playtest offering, as is Roger Clark’s narrator.

Also, you’ll get to sample both exploration and combat.

“After crash-landing in the Entertainment District of Hivemarket on Akiton, players will meet their first companions and begin investigating the fate of Captain Khali,” a synopsis of the playtest reads.

“They can explore this part of the city, interact with the world and experience the turn-based combat system.”

As for how you can get involved, you need to register via Steam as soon as you can.

If you head on over to Starfinder: Afterlight’s listing, you’ll see a pretty large box that states, “Join the Starfinder: Afterlight Playtest”, with a green button reading, “Request Access”.

Simply hit that, follow the steps provided and hopefully, Epictellers will be in touch with the code you need to get involved.

Starfinder: Afterlight is due to launch in early access on PC this year, although an exact release date is not yet available.
