PlayStation’s next exclusive Marvel game is getting slated online, after plot details were dropped following its State of Play presentation.

On 2 June, PlayStation gamers were given a sneak peek at some of the excellent games coming to their consoles later this year and in 2027.

The biggest reveal of the bunch was obviously God of War Laufey but Marvel’s The Wolverine also got ample time to shine. It’s a shame the plot is already leaving fans wanting more, though.

Marvel’s The Wolverine Has A Classic Insomniac Story Problem

Insomniac Studios’ take on Wolverine is looking pretty faithful. Logan’s rough, tough and shreds his way through enemies like a hot knife through butter.

The gameplay we saw at State of Play looked like everything you’d expect from a Wolverine game and it even managed to nail his healing factor. There’s even a clever excuse for why you can get a game over.

Jean Grey also made an appearance and will join Wolverine on some of his missions, though this is where the problem starts.

Apparently, Wolverine and Jean have been active heroes in this universe for quite some time and yet the X-Men don’t exist. It was rumoured a while ago that in addition to the Wolverine game plus Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, Insomniac Games also plans to make an X-Men spin-off, implying the events of this game will lead to that team being formed.

This idea is getting burned to a crisp by fans though, who are dredging up some of the old memes from the Marvel’s Spider-Man games in response to this new development.

An X post by lunwi75 read: “The X-Men don’t exist yet but Logan & Jean have seemingly been superheroing for a while… that means ALL the X-Men can get anti-Magneto suits to fight Magneto for the first time in their individual eight-year careers!”

The joke here is that the Spidey we see in Marvel’s Spider-Man has been active for a while, but in his battle against Doctor Octopus, he needed to craft an all-new high-tech suit just to seemingly stand a chance.

Insomniac Games’ take on the Marvel universe seems to have a habit of giving its heroes established careers, only to be missing some of the biggest parts of their lore/rogues gallery.

If Wolverine does in fact, put on some sort of high-tech suit to fight a superpowered Sentinel, Insomniac won’t hear the end of it.

While Wolverine isn’t a member of the X-Men yet, he is a member of Team X, which does exist in the comics, though Marvel’s The Wolverine seems to be giving us a different adaptation.

If we had to guess, we’d say Wolverine meets a bunch of different mutants on his travels throughout the world, before they’re eventually united by Charles Xavier to form the superhero team we know and love.

Quips from fans aside, the game looks solid. You can tell it’s set in the same world as Marvel’s Spider-Man but it’s obviously going for a very different vibe.
