God Of War set to return next year

Kratos is going back to his roots

According to rumours circulating around those interwebs, there’s a new God of War game on the horizon.

Discussion has been doing the rounds for the past few weeks, with folks saying it’ll be a metroidvania game taking Kratos back to Greece, debuting on PlayStation soon.

However, it seems that Jeff Grubb has some insider information, and has stated that the game, which hasn’t been announced or mentioned by Sony or Santa Monica Studios, has been delayed to 2026.

Reported by ScreenTime over on Twitter, the news can be seen as a shock to fans who were eagerly anticipating a new God of War adventure.

Of course, as there is literally nothing concrete out there about this game, aside from rumours, it might be best to wait until Sony has something to say before getting upset by the push into 2026.

It’s been a while since the release of God of War Ragnarök, and since then, fans have wondered if we’d get more from the story of father and son, or whether we’re due for a new story.

Past rumours have suggested that Kratos would be journeying through Egypt in the next game, while others heavily hinted that we’d be heading back to his roots in Greece.

The latter is now the heavy favourite, and if it really is going to be a metroidvania, then it could end up splitting fans.

A new genre with the same solid story would be a great move, because, let’s be honest, it’s not going to be the next mainline game, more like a little spin-off while we wait for the next brutal action game.

Let’s hope we get some solid news soon, so that we can eagerly look forward to something new from the beloved franchise.

It has worked for other big series, so a fresh take on God of War might be exactly what we need.
