Following a promising update regarding Ghost of Yōtei, it feels like a new sequel is more likely to happen than ever.
One of my favourite games in recent years is Ghost of Tsushima from Sucker Punch Productions. It followed the story of a young samurai named Jin Sakai, raised in nobility and a strict moral code. However, his way of life is brought into question when his homeland is invaded.
Fans wanted a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima with a returning Jin Sakai, especially as we felt that his story had so much more to explore. But when Ghost of Yōtei was announced during a State of Play in September 2024, it caught some fans by surprise.
Ghost of Yōtei is a totally new story, with a new protagonist named Atsu and with it being set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, it obviously means that Jin Sakai isn't returning. Understandably, many fans were disappointed by this.

Some of the negative discourse that surrounded Ghost of Yōtei not only revolved around the fact that Jin Sakai isn't returning, but its new protagonist is a female ronin. Many thought that the negativity might have impacted the sales of Ghost of Yōtei. Thankfully, it seems that was never the case.
Ghost of Yōtei Sales Exceed Ghost of Tsushima

As reported by Comicbook.com, when speaking to investors, Sony’s chief financial officer, Lin Tao, revealed that Ghost of Yōtei has exceeded the sales of Ghost of Tsushima over the same period of time from each respective launch.
Interestingly, Sony hasn't released the Ghost of Yōtei sales numbers yet, which is a shame, because I would love to compare numbers. What’s more, only time will tell whether or not Ghost of Yōtei will continue to sell more copies than Ghost of Tsushima in the coming years.

Will We Get a Ghost of Tsushima or Yōtei Sequel on PS6?
Again, only time will tell. What we do know is that corporate bigwigs are money-motivated. Which is why I wouldn't be surprised if, after the second game's explosive sales success, the third game in the Ghosts series could be a major console seller.
I'm spitballing here, but I think, with the PS6 rumoured to be delayed until 2029, there's a good chance the third game could be a PS6 exclusive. That leaves 4 years betweenYōtei and its unannounced third game. The same amount of time between Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei releasing!
While neither Sony nor Sucker Punch Productions has confirmed that a third game in the series is on the way, it at least seems very likely, given that Ghost of Yōtei has exceeded sales expectations.
Which is why the sales of Ghost of Tsushima justified the existence of Ghost of Yōtei, and I would assume that will be the same logic moving forward.
The question remains: Will we get a Ghost of Tsushima or Ghost of Yōtei sequel? In my opinion, I’d love for Jin Sakai’s story to be explored further before we get more Atsu. That being said, I’d still be very happy with a new story and protagonist.
Ghost of Tsushima is out now on PC, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, while Ghost of Yōtei is currently only available on PS5.
