Stardew Valley Has Punishing Difficulty Mod Mode, Cosy to Crushing

That's one way to switch up the experience

Stardew Valley has its fair share of grind, but it is a rather relaxing and simple game on the whole.

It doesn’t have to be, however. If you’re yearning for some extra challenge or a way to overhaul the title’s gameplay, I have a mod the PC gamers amongst you may want to check out.

‘JP’s Hardew Valley CU - Slow Life - Expert Mode’ essentially increases the difficulty of Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone’s cosy titan, adding a punishing new set of challenges.

It’s the work of NexusMods user juanpa98ar, and while the mod has actually been around for almost six years, it's still being updated to this day with the latest update arriving just two weeks ago.

“After a while, this game is no longer the same. Bring back the excitement with increased difficulty,” the mod’s description reads.

“Modify almost every aspect of the game with this mod. Use your head to manage your farm! Set your own pace with this mod.”

What Kind of Challenges Are We Talking About?

There are various ways players can use the mod to make for a more crushing Stardew Valley experience.

For example, you can reduce the income gathered from collectable items, animal products, and harvestables.

The mod can reduce gold obtained from Special Orders as well as the energy and health efficiency of cooking recipes.

You might want to make crafting more difficult with the mod capable of upping the item requirements, with the same going for materials required for building.

There’s the opportunity to increase the number of items required in bundles, whilst users of the mod can increase weapon and monster damage too, with monsters becoming speedier, stronger, and having a better range of vision if you wish.

There are options to increase the growth time of animals or the harvest time of crops, alter how often you can use furnaces and kilns, and adjust the difficulty of the fishing mini-game.

I’m sure you get the idea. In essence, there’s a way you can make every single in-game action, task, or activity more difficult, if you yearn for that kind of experience.

What’s great about this mod is it’s adjustable too, so you can alter the difficulty settings to up the ante where you wish and keep things as they are elsewhere.

Perhaps that’s why it’s endured over the years as a firm fan-favourite.

“Back to Stardew Valley and this is always in the first 10 mods I download an update for - a must have for me,” replied one happy user.

“Love this mod! It's a must have, 100%,” added another.

The mod is totally free so if you’re on PC and don’t mind a bit of a challenge, it’s one to try out.
