The Resident Evil games started getting weird when Capcom began experimenting with multiplayer.
Resident Evil 5 is great fun with a friend, but only with a friend, and Resident Evil 6 isn’t even worth talking about.
Hopefully, the more negative reception to those games won’t encourage Capcom to cut multiplayer from the inevitable Resident Evil 5 remake, but in the meantime, you can now play through the stellar story of Resident Evil 4 (2023) in co-op.
Resident Evil fan claybtv recently released the Resident Evil 4 Multiplayer Mod for free on Nexus, and it’s quite special.
In this bizarre what-if reality, Leon obviously decided to clone himself so he’ll never have to face the terror of a survival horror by himself again. Hey, if Albert Wesker can do it, why can’t the other Resident Evil characters?

The second Leon is obviously controlled by your co-op partner via online multiplayer, and judging from the gameplay, the experience is surprisingly smooth.
In the mod’s description, claybtv said it “maintains synchronisation of enemies, story events, doors, switches, alarms, and many other elements between both players' machines.”
They went on to say that “since Resident Evil 4 was originally designed as a single-player game, achieving this level of synchronisation between two separate game copies is a highly complex technical challenge.”
That won’t be an exaggeration by any means, but the results speak for themselves; it’s looking great so far.

We say so far because you unfortunately won’t be able to play the full game in multiplayer just yet.
While it’s available now and downloadable for free from NexusMods, it’s basically just a beta, so there’ll come a point where you can go no further with two players. It’s still well-worth playing, though, as we’re sure any feedback will be both helpful and appreciated as claybtv continues to work on the project.
They also added that while the mod is made for non-profit, it’s still quite costly to develop and provide servers for, so they’re open to donations should any kind soul wish to throw them a bone or two.
Capcom is yet to confirm plans for a Resident Evil 5 remake, but it’s heavily implied that one is happening. The end of Resident Evil 4’s DLC expansion, Separate Ways, hinted as much, and with Resident Evil: Veronica’s expanded story already confirmed, there’ll no doubt be a few Easter Eggs or allusions there too.
Despite not being an official project by Capcom, claybtv's multiplayer Resident Evil 4 mod proves a co-op remake would absolutely work, and we’re excited to see more.
