Resident Evil 4 First Person Mode is a Beauty, Changes Game Entirely

Get a fresh perspective.

Resident Evil 4 fans can now play the game in first-person mode, and it completely changes up how you play the game.

The Resident Evil franchise is no stranger to changing up the gameplay, having experimented with different perspectives over the years.

From fixed-angle perspectives, to over-the-shoulder, to first-person gameplay, the series has a little something for everyone.

While Resident Evil 4 is strictly a third person game (unless you count the rather good PS VR2 port), one fan has modded the game on PC to feature a tactical first person camera.

Created by modder ErwinGunsmith, the Tactical First-Person Mode mod transforms the game so you’re playing entirely from Leon’s eyeview. It features iron sights for every weapon, along with custom aim stances and animations.

I ought to stress this is for the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4, not the original version of the game which was also in third person.

I’ve included a video below demonstrating the mod, featuring some gameplay of the first-person mode during the opening village combat sequences, showing off how it works.

As you can see from the video, it all looks incredibly polished. The animations are clean and movement works as it should.

However, there are a few awkward moments where Leon’s arm or shoulder obstructs the player’s view, which is probably a side effect of the fact that the game is still using third person models for the character.

With that said, certain elements like Leon’s head and accessories are hidden automatically, just so they don’t get in the way when you’re moving around.

If you want to switch between perspectives, the mod also includes a way to toggle between first person and third person mode. Considering some sections of the game may work better in one perspective over the other, it sounds like a good idea to be able to switch between the two.

The mod adds custom iron sights and improved aiming down the weapon scopes.

As a result of the game originally being third person, Capcom didn’t really intend for you to see these weapons from this view, hence why ErwinGunsmith has added in these features.

If you’re interested in checking out the first person mode in Resident Evil 4, you can go to Tactical First-Person Mode on Nexus Mods now. Obviously, you'll need to own the PC version of Resident Evil 4 in order to play with this mod.
