Capcom’s Resident Evil series is one of the most iconic franchises of all time and as each year passes, the series evolves and becomes even more popular earning a new legion of fans with every new title.

When the Resident Evil series began in 1996, due to technical limitations of the time, it featured pre-rendered backgrounds, tank controls and fixed camera angles. However, rather than being considered a limitation by fans, those three elements benefited the survival horror element. In moments of panic, it was a little more difficult to escape a zombie due to the tank controls - and with the fixed camera angles, it hid what evil may lurk behind the next corner.

The last old-school game in the series was Resident Evil Code: Veronica sharing many of the characteristics of the games that came before. By the way, Capcom, can we have a Code: Veronica remake already, please? Then by the time we had gotten to Resident Evil 5, we had fully 3D environments, no tank controls and a free camera perspective. Whether it's old-school or new-school Resident Evil, each offers something a little different for fans of the series.

In 2019, we were treated to the fantastic Resident Evil 2 remake which starred Nick Apostolides as Leon S. Kennedy and Stephanie Panisello as Claire Redfield. This remake was a delight from start to finish, offering plenty of scares, gorgeous visuals, plenty of replay value, and more. However, as good of a remake as the 2019 version of Resident Evil 2 is, some fans were missing the fixed camera angles of the original Resident Evil 2 released in 1998.

Thankfully, PC gamers have the luxury of talented modders who breathe new life into the games we love. One such mod that will be a delight for old-school Resident Evil fans is one created by alphaZomega that brings fixed camera angles to the Resident Evil 2 remake which makes it feel like an entirely new game. Oh, and it’s free to download now via Nexusmods.

You can check out how awesome this fixed camera mod is by checking out the gameplay from content creators Residence of Evil in this article. Seriously, I’m feeling quite jealous right now.

The ‘RE2R Classic’ mod replicates the gameplay of the original Resident Evil 2 from 1998 by implementing over 1,700 fixed cameras for both of the Leon and Claire campaigns from start to finish. It’s a shame that fixed camera angles weren't an option in either of the Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3 remakes, even as post-launch DLC. Nonetheless, at least PC gamers can enjoy the fruits of alphaZomega’s labour.

The Resident Evil 2 remake is out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
