Kingmakers, a game that looks like a mash-up between Grand Theft Auto and Dark Souls, is getting a release later this year.

If you’ve ever wondered what a GTA game would look like if it was set in medieval times, but had guns and cars still present, you’d get Kingmakers.

The game is essentially that, where you play as a time traveller who has come 500 years into the past to change the course of a war and avert disaster in the future by creating a new alternate timeline.

You achieve this by bringing a huge arsenal of guns and vehicles, allowing you to mow down armies of soldiers that are charging at you.

Your weapons are made up of an assortment of firearms, grenades, vehicles and air support to defeat enemies and cause havoc on the battlefield, with the ultimate objective of defeating the enemy army by any means necessary.

It switches between two styles of gameplay, where one moment you’re commanding your armies from a top-down perspective like a strategy game, and the next moment you’re taking control of an ordinary foot soldier participating in the battle.

It should be appealing to anyone who enjoys either play style, allowing you to swap between the two modes seamlessly.

Kingmakers uses a real-time simulation mechanic to give every enemy AI unique behaviour patterns.

Combined with the fact that thousands of soldiers are rendered on-screen at any one time, the result is a chaotic battle with an unprecedented level of confusion.

Check out the trailer below, and see for yourself just how hectic this looks.

It will be playable solo or with friends in online co-op, in which they can bring their own armies to your aid to break down the enemy defenses.

Kingmakers launches into Steam Early Access on 8th October, 2025, after a five-year development cycle.
