A popular mode in GTA Online, a game included with GTA V at no extra cost, has been shut down by Rockstar Games.
Without question, GTA V, which was originally released in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, is not only one of the most successful video games of all time within its respective industry, but it’s also one of the most successful properties in all of entertainment.
A large portion of GTA V’s success can be credited to the fact that Rockstar Games has released it on every console generation since its launch, the most recent being on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2022. Another reason for its continued success is GTA Online.
In its own right, GTA Online is a fantastic game that garners millions of players from all over the world, and it also brings in obscene revenue for Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, due to the implementation of its Shark Card microtransactions and regular content updates.
Exclusive to the PC version of GTA Online, it benefits from player-run multiplayer servers, which give players the freedom to roleplay without being randomly shot or blown up in their newly acquired sports car. Unless that was all part of the roleplay, of course.

Often enhanced by mods, in these servers, players might live a fantasy day job in the world of Los Santos, such as being a police officer, taxi driver, and more. These servers are mostly unofficial, but for the most part, as long as they fall within the terms of service and a community code of conduct, Rockstar Games lets them be, or at least they used to.

As brought to our attention by Rockstar Intel, the popular community-run RAGE:MP server has now shut down, with players encouraged to migrate to the now Rockstar Games-owned FiveM server. As of 31 August 2026, the server will no longer be functional. This process has been agreed upon between those who run the server and Rockstar Games.
“We know this is tough news for everyone — both developers and players. As FiveM is now Rockstar Games’ official platform for modding-based experiences, we’ve done our best to give you extra time to move your servers to their new home, and we will continue to do everything we can to make the switch over as smooth as possible,” reads a message from those who run RAGE: MP.
“All of us have put a huge amount of time and energy into building RAGE:MP. Thank you for being part of this journey and for everything you’ve done to help multiplayer grow. RAGE:MP was always defined more by the community than by the codebase.”
In the likely event that there will be no servers owned by the community in this current iteration of GTA Online or the next, it might be worth migrating over to FiveM at some point.
The next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is GTA VI, which will be released on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Its PC port hasn't been announced yet.
