With it feeling as though Fallout 5 will never actually arrive, fans are turning back to Fallout 4 but luckily, this free download gives us an expansion we never even knew we needed.

Despite Bethesda reportedly being hard at work on Fallout 5, juggling development with titles such as The Elder Scrolls VI can be no easy task so it is perhaps no surprise that we are not expected to receive the next Fallout entry any time soon.

However, with new fans discovering the RPG series for the first time following the popularity of the Prime Video television show with the same name, it's not a shock that Fallout 4 has had a resurgence in player numbers despite first being released back in 2015.

It has almost been a decade since players descended upon the Commonwealth in Fallout 4 but with content scarce, it is thanks to modders that the RPG is still as popular today.

Beyond the Borders - New Lands, a free expansion for Fallout 4 created by WOTmodsproductions on NexusMods, is one such example.

This mod will expand the borders of Fallout 4 to the north and features 20+ new locations, enemies, weapons, and fully-voiced NPCs.

The mod was completed back in 2016 and has since been downloaded by over 118,000 users so it is safe to say that this is a must-play for Fallout 4 fans.

Fallout 4: New Lands was created over the course of four months and the creator aimed to keep the new locations as lore-friendly as possible.

“This is a complete mod with new enemies (including two hidden bosses of a very high level, both which have unique weapons and can be found following a set of hidden clues), 20+ new locations built from scratch, weapons and voice acted NPCs and a new raider gang called the Desperadoes,” the user explains.

Players can also stumble across multiple Easter eggs as well as one hidden, unmarked quest with a series of puzzles to solve.

Fallout 4: New Lands is an excellent way to dive back into the Bethesda RPG whilst exploring brand-new content, especially as it may still be a few years to go until we can finally get our hands on Fallout 5.
